Maitake Mushroom, Dried Organic

Certified Organic Grifola Frondosa, also known as hen-of-the-woods is a polypore mushroom that grows at the base of trees, particularly old growth oaks or maples. Native to China, Europe and North America, it is typically found in late summer to early autumn. This mushroom is called “maitake” in Japan and “hui-shu-hua” in China. Maitake has been a choice edible mushroom and has been consumed for centuries in China and Japan.

Early research on the benefits of maitake mushrooms is limited. Some of the findings include possible benefits to breast cancer patients without serious adverse side effects. Other studies indicate that the beta glucan found in maitake may lower blood glucose levels and thereby benefitting individuals with diabetes. Although promising, more research is needed. Other studies caution that maitake supplementation can increase levels of the immunosuppressive cytokine IL-10, suggesting that it may not be suitable for people with cancer or with compromised immune system.

Although research is still needed on the benefits of maitake mushrooms, it has been part of Chinese and Japanese traditional medicine for centuries to promote spleen and stomach health, and to help calm nerves.

Store dried mushrooms in airtight containers and store them in the freezer at the lowest possible temperature (0 degrees F is ideal) for the longest shelf life.
