Formitopsis Pinicola (also known as “Red Banded Polypore” or “Red Belted Conk”) is a large, dense and woody mushroom found predominantly in temperate, coniferous forests throughout Europe and Asia. Fomitopsis pinicola has been extensively used for medicinal purposes, particularly in Chinese and Korean traditional medicine. North American Indians have also used a conk type mushroom as a medicinal mushroom; however, it has been suggested that it may be a different species within the formitopsis family. Although studies are few, they suggest that red belted polypore may have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties.
